Antibiotic Stewardship

Foster Farms is actively committed to responsible growing practices that help preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for human health and medicine. We share a common goal with medical, veterinary and government leaders in working to curb antibiotic resistance in humans that may be linked to livestock production. Foster Farms is working toward a goal of eliminating the use of all antibiotics that are used in human medicine, except in those instances where the clinical health of a flock is at risk. The company does not use antibiotics for growth promotion or feed efficiency.

The practices below, prescribed by Foster Farms veterinary staff, protect and preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics, while ensuring the welfare of our chicken flocks:

  • Antibiotics will not be used in-ovo, sub-therapeutically, or for growth promotion or feed conversion purposes in broiler production.
  • Antibiotics1 may be used to treat chickens that have a documented microbial disease or for disease control only as dictated by a licensed Veterinarian.
  • Critically important antibiotics in human medicine2 will not be used to treat, prevent or control disease.

Foster Farms’ antibiotic practices are independently audited to ensure compliance with goals and performance.

California Supply Chains Act

Foster Farms believes that Human Rights are a worldwide corporate responsibility and that all human beings are entitled to live and work with dignity. Although a U.S.-based poultry producer with limited international activity, Foster Farms takes comprehensive steps to ensure that the vendors it does business with adhere to this principle, and are free from human rights violations, including the trafficking in human beings.

These steps include:

  1. Verification
    1. Foster Farms is committed to fair labor standards in its supply chain. Foster Farms may conduct periodic random assessments of product suppliers to verify that they are not at risk for violating anti-slavery and human trafficking laws.
  2. Training
    1. Foster Farms provides special training for its Supply Chain Management to maintain ongoing awareness of Human Rights issues and abuses, such as the trafficking in human beings. Additionally, all members of the Foster Farms executive leadership receive similar training in Human Rights issues every two years.
  3. Certification
    1. Foster Farms may require that vendors provide certification of compliance with all applicable laws governing employment, and human rights, including the prohibition of human trafficking.
  4. Supplier Audits:
    1. Foster Farms reserves the right to require vendors to provide independent third-party-audited proof of compliance and certification, but does not directly conduct independent third-party vendor audits. Foster Farms will promptly and thoroughly investigate any claims or indications that a supplier is engaging in the violation of human rights, including human trafficking.

Internal Accountability:

Internal Accountability: Foster Farms’ enforcement of this policy will result in termination of any supplier that fails to provide certification and any requisite proof of compliance, or in any other way fails to meet expectations regarding Human Rights.
